Powdered activated carbon is used in liquids to remove unwanted colour, odour and trace impurities. It is usually added in a batch process near the last stage of making a product: a measured dose goes into the solution, is stirred for a set contact time (often at higher temperature), then filtered out to leave a clear, colour-free liquid.
Besides decolourising, it can give a longer shelf life, cleaner crystals and tighter melting and boiling points in the finished product.
